Het Ideaal Van Een Moderne Indonesische Schilderkunst 1900 - 1995
In Western art history Indonesian art has most times been classified as Oriental art. In the West the term Indonesian art is predominantly associated with traditional forms of art or with the archaeological Hindu-Javanese monuments. These associations are based on the western image of the East, that originated during the colonial period. The development of modern Indonesian painting took place in the circle of an intelectual, urban life. Modern Indonesian painting passed through several phases. Originally the technique of oilpant on canvas, which had been imported from the west in the Dutch-Indies, was used to comply with the wishes of a colonial public. This situation changed considerably during the rise of Indonesian nationalism, the fight for independence and the process of decolonization afterwards.
