Diverse Gods
Characteristic of MISE's paintings is the way he intricately paints in ink and adds small pieces of Japanese paper to enlarge accidental shapes formed by the tarashikomi (lit. dripping in) technique and decalcomania. His awareness in painting is an attempted birth of a universe. As if climbing straight into his work, the daily fragments MISE spent glued to the surface of his paintings are his present and past. His spatial grasp of both miniscule and enormous gives rise to a magnetic force and creates the freedom of perspective often found in a picture scroll. However, the sorrow that emanates from his huge panels and his vision of elusive insecurity and indignation will surely continue to be tinged with symbolism.
