San Minn: Solo 2015
THEO Arts Professionals are proud to present the side-by-side solos of two important living Modernists of Myanmar, San Minn and Aung Myint.
Since the late 1970s to 1980s, San Minn and Aung Myint had given themselves to spearheading many exhibitions in Yangon, inspiring their peers, and also inspiring fellow artists to experiment with, and make new art. Both artists exhibited in Singapore for the first time in 1996, and their works which are in collection of the National Gallery Singapore will also be seen in Between Declarations and Dreams: Art of Southeast Asia since the 19th Century, UOB Southeast Asia Gallery Permanent Exhibition, National Gallery, Singapore, when it opens to the public later in November.
Exhibitions of San Minn's work include Freedom in Blossom: Gangaw Village and Experimental Art in 1980s Burma at Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, Birmanie, Myanmar: Un Autre Regard, Université de Provence International, Marseilles, and Banned in Burma: Painting Under Censorship, The Nock Art Foundation, Hong Kong. This exhibition, San Minn: Solo 2015 features new paintings, as well as selected works from 1979 to 1994. It is San Minn's thirteenth solo exhibition, and his first solo show in Singapore.
Following in the tracks of the three great modernists Kin Maung Yin, Paw Oo Thett and Win Pe, both San Minn and Aung Myint began their art as experiments in modern visual language, including abstract expressionist and surrealist developments. San Minn was also a founder of the Gangaw Village artists' group, which has been recognised for being the hotbed of art development in the 1980s. Much of San Minn's work is autobiographical, making sharp social commentary on the popular culture, social values and circumstances he has lived in.
