This book traces the development of the art of photography in Indonesia from the colonial era until the present day’s digital age. The author uses essays, which are co-published by Afterhours Books and Amsterdam University Press, in order to narrate the development of photography through many different voices. These essays are written by prominent artists, curators, and scholars who have worked for extended periods of time in Indonesia studying photography. This book also contains many photographs, including some of the author’s own, in order to visually show how photography has developed in Indonesia over the years. The author also places a large emphasis on the accessibility of photography, beginning in the 1840s when only the Dutch elite could photograph, all the way up until every person had a cell phone with a camera in their pocket.

The medium was first brought to Indonesia in the 1840s by the Dutch for the sole purpose of spreading colonial propaganda. Over time, the medium grew in popularity and began to be used by Indonesian citizens as a form of expression. It gained momentum and was used to help the movement for Independence and as an agent for advocating for democracy.

Brian C. Arnold first traveled to Indonesia on a university semester program when he was 22, where his interest in Indonesian culture began. He originally came to Indonesia to study traditional gamelan and pursue his passion for music. He lived there for 6 months, Immersing himself in the culture. What he learned and experienced during his time there had a huge impact on his artistic and academic identity, leading to his interest in the development of Indonesian photography. He has now taught and lectured on photography at a number of institutions around the world. Arnold has exhibited his work internationally, and his photographs are included as part of the permanent collections in many prestigious galleries, in both the US and South-East Asia.
