Indonesia in Sogeun: MES 56 - Keren dan Beken
SongEun ArtSpace is very excited to present a group show of young Indonesian artists under the title "Indonesia in SongEun: MES 56 - Keren dan Beken". Since 2012, these types of national exhibitions have become an annual project in hopes to combine efforts with one country to introduce young artists yet widely known in Korea, while providing the occasion for artists of other nations to experience the Korean art world, thus creating an equal opportunity for deeper understanding of visual art and culture.
Following Switzerland, France, and Italy as our fourth national partner, Indonesia is a country with an incredibly flourishing art culture and an active artistic community. However, not much of this scene is known in Korea. In addition, this is the very first group exhibition in Korea of MES 56 -a non-profit organization set up by artists of Yogyakarta, Indonesia in 2002 to promote the production and provision of experimental artistic photography -serving as an excellent chance to peer into an artist run organization formed at a time when photography was not yet recognized as contemporary art and how they used photography and media as a medium to illuminate and experiment the political, social, religious, and cultural aspects of Indonesia.
I would like to extend my deepest gratitude towards our guest curator and director of the ROH Projects Mr Laksamana Tirtadji as well as the 14 participating artists of MES 56 namely Jim Allen Abel, Akiq AW, Wimo Ambala Bayang, Nunung Prasetyo, Angki Purbandono, Rangga Purbaya, Yudha Kusuma Putera, Eri Rama Putra, Wok The Rock, Edwin Roseno, Anang Saptoto, Daniel Satyagraha, Andri William, and Dito Yuwono, whose tireless efforts has made this a meaningful and wonderful exhibition.
It is my sincere wish that this exhibition serves as a good exercise for those visiting SongEun ArtSpace including members of the art community to directly and indirectly experience the art and culture of Indonesia, and to also be able to appreciate the activities and vision of MES 56.
