Aesthetics and Philosophy of Art Criticism: A Critical Introduction

Stolnitz, Jerome - Personal Name;

From Jerome Stolnitz: rnrn"The book is addressed to students in introductory courses in aesthetics, philosophy of art, philosophy art criticism. Many students enter such courses primarily because of their interest in one or more of the arts, and often with little or no previous training in philosophy. I have tried to bear this fact in mind. The text does not presuppose familiarity with logic, the history of philosophy, or any other field of philosophy which must be drawn upon in the study of aesthetics. All references to these fields are explained as they occur. More important, I have, throughout, attempted to relate the "critical" work of philosophy to the student's own concerns. If I have succeeded, he will feel the pertinence of bringing to light, analyzing, and assessing our foundational beliefs concerning art and the aesthetic. To this end, I have given particular attention to those concepts which, since they have great currency in aesthetic thought and discourse at the present time, dominate the thinking of many students, e.g./ "expression," which is nowadays even used, without qualification, as a value-term ("How expressive!") or the genetic-biographical interpretation of fine art. The student must see for himself what is gained in the clarity, consistency, and insight, by examining such beliefs. The ere is no point in trying to teach philosophy if our students come to think of the study as an exercise in futility of logic-chopping."rnrnThis is a beginners guide to "critical" thinking within the context of art. Containing 27 "plates" or images of art, along with a very large amount of analysis and explanation, this book aims to give the novice reader, and even the expert, a solid foundation in philosophic and critical thinking when applied to art. The book starts with the study of Aesthetics in a general sense, before moving into the nature of Art itself, along with theories of aesthetic fineness. It then goes from there to structure, form, and addresses problems with the philosophy of aesthetics in general. Furthermore, it then teaches the student evaluation, criticism, and the values/ functions that come with such pursuits.
