Buku
Indonesian Modern Art and Beyond
The publication is based on the premise that Indonesian modern art – as Susrinah Sanyoto Sastrowardoyo states in the introduction – is often misinterpreted as “modern Indonesian art”, a continuation of traditional Indonesian art. This conception leads to ignoring the long history of Indonesian modern art ((beginning with the influence of western art and culture as early as in the 17th century)), and with its own reflection on the modernization process and societal reformation in Indonesia. Second, it leads to a simplified understanding of a homogenous tradition, ignoring the vastly different traditions of the country’s three hundred ethnic groups. The publication by the Indonesian Fine Arts Foundation aims to distribute information on Indonesian modern art to the international art world. It describes the background and development of Indonesian modern art as well as transitions into contemporary art. rnrn“(T)o gain a new international understanding in world art, it is important to evaluate the common understanding of Modernism. The effort should be startled with a kind of “de-sophistication” of Modernism by rediscovering its connection with modernity and modernization. We can start this effort by reading Modernism (with a capital “M”, as codified in the 1950’s) as modernism (with a small “m”) which refers to the thoughts behind modern art and its development, or any thoughts emerging behind modernity and the process of modernization.” (From the introduction)
